There are four birthstones in December: Tanzanite, Zircon, Blue Topaz and Turquoise. Each of these gemstones carries a heavenly blue colour.
Tanzanite
Tanzanite was discovered in the late 1960s in Tanzania and it is the only source location. Like Sapphire, a deep saturated blue is tanzanite’s most valuable colour, although many treasures a rich violet blue hue. It is often heat treated to achieve its colour. Now it has become increasingly popular due to its own beauty and brilliance.
Turquoise
Turquoise has three basic qualities: colour, texture and the absence of matrix.
Turquoise colour ranges from blue to green. The most valued colour is intense, medium blue. Its transparency ranges from translucent to opaque.
Zircon
Zircon is known for its vitreous luster. It has a wide range of colour such as blue, yellow, orange, red, brown, green and colourless. The desirable blue zircon is achieved by heat treatment. Major sources of zircon come from Cambodia and Vietnam.
Blue Topaz
The most rare and prized colour topaz is imperial topaz and features an orange body colour with pink undertones. Topaz has an exceptionally wide range of colour blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple and colourless. The most popular is blue topaz, often heat treated.
